Saw the new small theatrical release but really available streaming satire of romantic comedies They Came Together (tag line: he came, she came, they both came which is clearly not innuendo) starring Amy Poehler (who is the best) and Paul Rudd (playing a guy named Joel who wants to open a cafe called Cup of Joel which seems like a good idea to me!). Tons of cameos from their friends (Cobie Smulder, Bill Hader, Ed Helms, John Stamos, Norah Jones and her new single)… The movie is a knowing and wicked satire of romantic comedies and all the genre’s usual tropes. But since it’s such a a satire, there’s no real characters in it, just jokes. I laughed at those jokes and that’s all the movie really cares about so it worked. Whether it works for you depends on if you think romantic comedies deserve to be mocked.
