Not entirely sure why I hit play on this Amazon Prime video… experiment? Jennifer Lopez marketing push? Musical? Extended Music Video? Vanity project? I kinda sorta like J. Lo and I heard it was bonkers… and only an hour long… so I gave it a shot.
It’s about a woman who looks like J. Lo but I guess isn’t who is stupid wealthy and unlucky in love… but desperate to live her life with someone. Multiple someones, as it turns out. And then something something hummingbirds and a star-studded cast of astrological signs. And Ben Affleck with face prosthetics.
There’s a lot of weirdness for an hour… but also a lot of kind of annoying self-indulgence. But maybe self-indulgence defines ALL music videos and this just happens to be an overly long one of those. And I’m not the kind of person who would “poor little rich girl” J. Lo. Everyone’s emotional and existential crises are important to them.
But, yeah, I found it hard to care personally. I’m sure this is super meaningful to Lopez and her fans are probably swooning all over the place. But it wasn’t much of anything to me… besides a mix of very good and iffy CGI everywhere accompanied by some of her new songs that did nothing for me.
The weird atrological sign / Greek chorus was amusing just because it was a mash-up of celebrities. Post Malone and Jane Fonda? Keke Palmer, Trevor Noah, and Neil deGrasse Tyson? Sure… why not?
I’m not the target market for a J. Lo extended music video… but her fans will be fine. I’m not sure anyone else would care. But it was an interesting experience, more-or-less.
