Til Death Do Us Part

Another blind theater experience – Til Death Do You Part… about all I knew is that it has a mainly African-american cast and a title that suggests another domestic horror suspense movie. And it was…. a rather mediocre but not entirely bad one. But there’s a dozen other movies just like it that are better (and worse).

A newly married (and very wealthy) couple are happy except she wants a baby and he doesn’t’. It spends twenty minutes making the guy just the perfect dude… until he goes from 0 to monster in about one line of dialog. Turns out he’s mentally and physically abusive, even after his wife is four months pregnant. Soon enough, she dies in a car crash but – surprise – she actually pulls a Sleeping with the Enemy (or less psychotic Gone Girl) and has actually faked her death. With a ton of cash, she changes her name and moves from one side of LA to the other.

Probably maybe should have run further. But that’s an example of how lazy and illogical the script is. The film editing is also jarring and abrupt…. and I’m pretty sure a good half dozen of the lines of dialog were the first flubbed attempts.

But the main problem is that we’ve seen this movie before, the husband is randomly monster, and you already know how it ends half way through the movie. Just another generic movie it’s type and not even fun or campy nor dark and suspenseful.

To its credit, even though the movie doesn’t earn it, it includes a pre-credit title card about abused women and how to get help. I guess it’s heart is in the right place.
