To Your Last Death is a weird amalgam of genres and styles… and not a bad one at that. For me, the biggest turn off was its animation style… it’s kind of a vaguely animated motion comic with a similar art style to the tv show Archer. If you’re into that kind of thing, you won’t have that barrier to entry.
The plot of the flick is a throw-it-all-against-the-wall sci-fi/fantasy/horror/action mashup. A wealthy war profiteer’s four adult children have derailed his plans for political power so now he wants his revenge. Revenge in the form of a Saw-style series of bloody death traps. Oh, and by the way, there’s a celestial game being played by god-like beings who are out to ensure the best version of this game is played. So insert some time-loop / Funny Games in too.
The mash-up of genres and use of time loops/resets leaves it a little overcooked but still pretty interesting. But since nothing is final or necessarily real, getting invested in the characters can be tough. But I think the movie also wants to just be cool and bad-ass so maybe if you get into that, it’ll be enjoyable.
I found it a little long but watchable and kind of interesting. It is very gory though made more palatable by the animation style (so be wary of that). I never personally got completely past the animation… it kept being distracting… but at least it was a well enough done version of that style. Not a great flick overall, but worth it for genre fans.
