What a lovely, sweet little surprise. This movie isn’t going to to change the world or start a revolution or change anyone’s life, but it was an enjoyable little cuddle of a movie. And maybe that’s enough.
The movie stars Ed Helms and (had to look this one up since, somehow, she isn’t third sister to Zoey and Emily Deschanel) Patti Harrison. They aren’t a couple… she’s the surrogate for his single father dreams, carrying his baby as a paid service. They bond over time, becoming friends. And that’s the movie… just a little human story.
This isn’t a romantic comedy but I can smell one when I watch it. It feels like a rom-com without actually being about romance. This is a story about friendship that maybe borders on, hints at, suggests it might be a silly romantic comedy. I liked the vibe and enjoyed the chemistry between these two actors. Ed Helms, being Ed Helms, can’t help but play to his mildly incompetent cringe comedy persona but that isn’t the focus of the movie (just makes for some amusingly awkward scenes).
There isn’t a lot of consequence in the film and there isn’t that “you lied to me” fake out faux drama that drives these two kids apart type scenarios and I respect the movie for it. Just a believable set of experiences in a human drama/comedy. This one is worth watching, maybe with a friend, maybe with your favorite teddy bear. Someone needs a hug.
