Apparently I continue to be radically behind on my modern stand-up comedians and apparently should watch more Netflix specials to keep up. Then maybe I’d appreciate these various stand-ups who man and woman this Netflix roast of 2024.

I agree that 2024 has an abundance of roast-worthy nonsense and deserves a real hit piece. There’s plenty to mock and jab and sneer at. Maybe by better comedians with better material though. This lot made me chuckle on occasion and go “ooOOOoh” at their transgressive “you can’t say that on tv” type zingers. But way more gags missed than hit.

Netflix has been doing these end-of-year reviews using talking heads to roast the previous year in dedicated, edited segments. This switch to stand-up with an MC was a bad idea. Editing together the carefully crafted best bits worked so much better than this shaggy “live” hit-or-miss standup.

Yeah, not my jam. 2024 has a lot to answer for, but this format and these jokers didn’t land.
