Tracks is an interesting true story of an Australian girl in the 1970s who decided to walk the width of the country with nothing but herself, her dog, and three camels. Why did she do this? I guess to see what’s on the other side (hint: an ocean).
Similar in theme to other “single person walks long distance” movies like Wild – what you get out of it depends, I think, on whether the idea of watching one person struggle (for no real reason other than personal accomplishment)… and the scenery. Which, here, is pretty much desert all the way to the sea.
It’s a good movie but the first half was kind of a struggle for me – I barely made it through it but I’m not sure what was turning me off. I think it just felt aimless, like there was no point to any of this. But the second half picks up and even becomes a little inspiring even though not a lot was changing. Mia Wasikoswka plays the lead and she carries the movie well. The dog is great… the camels are hideous ugly (remind me to never walk the length of Australia with them).
