Treasure

Treasure is a drama starring Lena Dunham as the daughter of a Polish Jew (Stephen Fry) who survived the death camps in WW2. Dunham’s character has brought her papa back to Poland so she can learn about all the things she doesn’t understand as an American… with her father a little more reluctant.

This is a pretty solid, if a little slow and stodgy, serious-minded drama about generational trauma. It appears to be filmed on location – including an excursion to Auschwitz – and has a certain sense of honesty and relevancy.

The scene at Auschwitz with Fry remembering details better than the tour guide was quite touching. The film never gets as mawkish as I expected… it has powerful scenes including those death camp memories but it doesn’t get showy or melodramatic.

Though maybe a little more outward emotion would have helped. This is a solid film that often felt a little cold and at arms length. I found some segments of it a little drawn out and lacking in apparent relevancy.

But otherwise it’s a worthwhile watch, though not sure it needs a run to the theaters. Kind of surprising it got a theatrical launch but maybe that’s a symptom of the writer and actors strikes.
