I think I spent every minute of this movie wondering why it was made, why I was watching it, and whether the obvious point it was making was really meant to be so obvious. And yet, I was entertained… I wasn’t bored… I was just casually confounded by why this dark hearted satire of the stupidly rich was such a casual hang.
Triangle of Sadness is more-or-less about a supermodel couple with relationship problems who go on a cruise for the super rich… and hanging out, listening to their vapid, clueless conversations until a storm hits. And then there’s a final act where things get worse.
Jeesh… it’s 2 1/2 hours of human disregard and misery, whether its listening to pretty vapid people have relationship troubles or watching the stupid rich puke and shit everywhere. It’s definitely a casual indictment of the wealthy through torment… but it’s just as much a casual indictment of human nature in general, regardless of your position of power at any given moment.
But a lot of the movie is a matter of interpretation since the flick doesn’t really come out in a top hat and shout to the rafters its theme. At first it seems like it’s a super obvious (and dubiously necessary) “rich people are bad, ya’ll” but it’s ambling, rambling nature eventually reveals its hand as a more equal opportunity hater. Or, at least, that’s my interpretation.
So, hey, at least the movie makes you think… and laugh a little. The humor is very much downplayed and more based on manners and interpretation. It’s definitely not trying to make you roll in the aisles.
I was entertained, even if it was a bit of a looooong walk to get to the unsatisfying credits.
