So, yeah, saw Turbo – the new CG kid friendly movie about the snail who races the Indy 500… and it’s a fairly good movie that’s also fairly predictable (once you, you know, get the past the part where the super-powered snail wants to race the Indy 500). It’s a sports movie mixed with a “you can live your dreams!” message movie and it’s cute and fun and occasionally funny and sappy and dramatic. Funny thing is, it’s also one of the most multicultural movies movies of the year… and that’s not in any of the marketing (not sure if that’s saying something bad…. or good)… it’s just as much about anthropomorphized snails jonesin’ for speed as it is about dos taco brothers running a failing Mexican taco stand, the Latina running a garage, the crazy Asian lady running a nail salon, and the old white guy running a hobby shop (none of whom are snails – these are humans with failing businesses… can they turn their businesses around by sponsoring a snail in the Indy 500?… who thought this up? jeesh). But, yeah, fun movie, not great, good voice cast (Snoop Dogg? Samuel L. Jackson? Ryan Reynolds (ladies, he’s only a snail…) What is going ON here?
