Virus :32 is an Argentinian / Uruguayan zombie horror flick that’s labeled a a Shudder Original. It’s somewhat generic as far as horror and scares go but borrows more from the fast rage zombies of 28 Days Later than the classic Romero zombies. It’s not a bad flick as it turns out. I was surprised since it was sinking very fast in the second act.
The flick is about the first night of a zombie outbreak. A security guard and her daughter are relatively safe in a gloomy old club she works at… until the zombies break in.
Nothing much to the plot, though it does play with some details in somewhat interesting ways. I mean, if you don’t mind terror based around cats and pregnant women, anyway. The movie sometimes “goes there” which can be a bit ugly and off-putting. But it’s a zombie flick… if you wanted roses and sunshine, there’s better flicks.
The first and final acts of the film are quite strong but it sags badly in the middle. A little too much sneaking around and being annoying inactive given the problem of, oh, you know, ZOMBIES. The opening act has some pretty impressive one shot scenes moving from exteriors to interiors and then to overhead tracking shots of buildings and streets. The majority of the movie is small scale interiors so these tracking shots were welcome and somewhat impressive.
Overall, I can give the movie a slight recommendation for horror fans. It doesn’t do itself any favors with the time-wasting second act but it comes together fairly well in the end. Pretty decent flick.
