Liam Neeson is back in tough-guy mode in the film A Walk Among the Tombstone… a gritty film noire/detective/gumshoe movie made for adults (by which I mean mature). Very good genre film with gritty, snappy dialog and a sly sense of humor (used sparingly). It plays well with a number of unique and interesting characters in a kidnapping mystery. It’s a slow burn (sometimes a little too slow) with a lot of style – it’s not Neesan’s typical action film since it puts a lot of focus on detective work and interrogations. It’s a detective movie with detecting. It has a real somber, disturbed atmosphere so people who don’t want their skin to crawl may want to avoid it. Recommended for folk who want something more adult, cerebral, and gritty without being showy about it.
What this reminds me a lot of was Prisoners, that Hugh Jackman/Jake Gyllenahall movie from last year only without its knowing and almost showy desire to go down the well of human depravity.
Also, apparently this is based on a series of detective novels in the line of a Jack Reacher books. I will say that this is better than the Jack Reacher movie (which was good) though I don’t know if they should be compared as I’ve never read this book and only one Reacher novel.
