Went to see the new Miles Teller/Jonah Hill arms dealer movie War Dogs. This is the apparently true story of a couple out-of-their-depths 20 somethings who become arms merchants for the US military during the Iraq and Afghan wars. Apparently due to the kerfuffle over the no-bid contracts for Dick Cheney’s Haliburton friends, the US military put every contract up for bid, including chump small ones that these two jokers could fulfill (like a bunch of pistols for the Iraqi police force). Then they get in over their head with a huge deal and things start going south.
This isn’t a bad movie but it’s a little long and it can’t seem to decide if it’s The Wolf of Wall Street (yay – celebrate hedonistic lifestyles) or The Big Short (boo the corruption in the American system). it settles on neither for sure but kind of gravitates towards turning these clowns into heroes. Which is fine if they committed but they never really did. they also didn’t fully commit to this being a comedy or a drama… so I guess it’s both.
Overall, the movie runs a little long and might make you angry at The System… or not. It’s fine. It’s worth seeing, maybe not at the movies but somewhere, sometime.
