Weekend in Taipei is a perfectly ok one of these. An ok to enjoyable fairly generic action flick with a decent one-on-many fight, a pretty good car chase, and maybe a little too much family drama. Given I expected very little from it, I got something.
It stars Luke Evans as an who was told not investigate a Taipei drug dealer who happens to go on vacation to Taiwan. As you do. He teams up with an old flame to take down the baddie as played by Han himself, Sung Kang. Something something “family” (and I’m not even making a Fast and Furious joke).
Yeah, this movie is perfectly alright. It’s got some attempts at John Wickian action that’s got some “Oooh! That’s gotta hurt” gags, it’s got a good Holly Golightly impression, a cool instrumental cover of Paint it Black, some pretty good family drama, and a good car chase. I mean, there’s not a lot wrong with it but it’s also just kinda perfectly ok.
It’s one flaw is maybe leaning a little too heavy on the family drama to the detriment of its action. In fact, it kind of gives up being an action flick after awhile, especially during the explosive finale. Which kind of seems like it gives up half way.
But otherwise, it’s all right. Even the family drama is serviceable enough. The action is derivative but performed well enough. Yeah, I’m repeating myself now. It’s fine.
