So… went to see Winter’s Tale… the new romantic magical realism film starring Collin Ferrell and a really curious cast including Russel Crowe, Jennifer Connely, William Hurt, and an insane cameo by a big movie star giving a wildly weird performance. This movie chucks a bunch of stuff in the air and decides to do whatever it wants… and given that the trailers give away a tiny amount of this, I loved being surprised (and a little befuddled) by this. What’s it about? Well, I’ll say this much… there’s an on-the-lamb burglar with a Destiny, a magical flying horse, a girl with unconvincing consumption, and an Irish gangster demon…. all set in NYC in 1914 and 2014. It all makes sense… I suppose… it’s certainly not a movie that had a lot of notes from the studio worried that they were making a gonzo weird movie. So I give them credit for allowing them to make a movie any damn way they wanted with as much weirdness as they wanted. It’s kind of a wonderful whiff… not completely successful in what it’s doing but dammit if they aren’t putting their all into it with massive doses of conviction.
