Checked out the movie Woman in Gold that was released a couple weeks ago starring Ryan Reynolds and Helen Mirren. It’s based on an interesting true story of a painting (“Woman in Gold”) that was stolen by the Nazis back in the 1940s and becomes the national pride of Austria (“the Mona Lisa of Austria”). Now, many years after the war, Helen Mirren’s character wants it back so she brings in her nephew (Reynolds) who is a young lawyer to help convince the Austrian government to return it to her.
It’s an interesting story that hops between the events of pre-war Austria (full of Nazis) and modern 1998 L.A. (full of lawsuits). It’s well-told and dramatic and it helped not knowing how the story ends (and I suspect most people won’t who aren’t big-time art fans). I’d recommend it as a nice little story with some heart, charm, and a little bit of wit.
