I guess with a title like Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop I shouldn’t be too surprised this is a frivolous, sugary anime. There’s good anime about nothing more than a sweet romance that I have enjoyed… but this one is just too much of nothing much for my taste.

The film follows two shy teens. The boy loves haikus but wears headphones to be left alone. The girl is a bubbly cute-obsessed social media star who wears a mask to hide her buck teeth. They meet and spend the summer together.

It’s as deep as a rain puddle. There’s just not much here. I’ll admit there were a couple moments at the end that earned a warm smile… but getting there wasn’t worth the effort. I wasn’t aggressively bored, but I was wildly uninterested.

This one just isn’t my bottle of soda pop.
