Kedi (2017)

Also rented on iTunes (apparently available on YouTubeRed) a documentary called Kedi… it’s about cats… street cats… and the people who take care of them… in Istanbul. Seventy minutes of cute cats living on the streets of an ancient city, the implication being they’ve been living this way for thousands of years.

Look, it runs long at 70 minutes but if you really want watch very well photographed cats in a stunning HD version of Istanbul, this can be a good, watchable movie. It looks gorgeous, the cinematography is amazing and they did a great job of capturing the various cats. They all appear to be strays and the gist is that Istanbul LOVES their stray cats and the shopkeepers, fishermen, restaurateurs, etc. all love taking care of them. Given how freely they move among pedestrians and don’t seem to mind the cameras, I’ll buy they are treated like rockstars in the city.

About a dozen cats and their caretakers are captured on film. The humans all talk about how they love their occasional visitors and they wax poetic about kitties. It’s cute, especially how they found some older, gruffer looking men who clearly love these animals.

I’m not sure it adds up to much other than “Awww…. look at the kittie!” but, hey, the kitties are cute…
