Sasquatch Sunset

I don’t know what to make of this film which is why it rose dramatically in my ratings the longer I watched it. If I’d walked out after the first thirty unbearable minutes, it’s be lucky to earn one star. But the more I watched, the more interesting the film got…

It’s about four anatomically correct sasquatches living their best big foot lives in the Pacific Northwest. They don’t speak… they only grunt and hoot at each other… they don’t “do” anything in particular besides eat, fuck, shit, and consume magic mushrooms.

Genre is a problem… because this is a comedy technically and it’s a shit comedy at that. Just some of the most low brow, crude, scatological garbage you can get.

But then, late in the film, one of the repeated “comedy” bits turned out to be something I had misjudged… (sometimes rubbing your crotch and smelling your finger isn’t actually an attempt at comedy… no matter how many times they repeat it).

Which made me curious what wavelength these nutjobs were on. It made me recontextualize some of the earlier scenes as something maybe they were carefully crafting to be more than they looked like. I still think some of the comedy is just low-brow shit… but kind of mixed in with some interesting themes.

Ugh. I can’t recommend this movie to anyone unless the idea of an unvoiced sasquatch comedy starring some name brand actors is something you find intriguing. Putting Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keogh in ape suits and making them hoot and growl is its own form of experimental comedy. But, even then, it might not work out if you don’t believe the writer/directors were up to something.

On the other hand, if you like piss and dick jokes and don’t mind a cryptic non-story about big foot doing nothing for 80+ minutes, you might get a kick out of it on a basic low-brow comedy level. I don’t know.

When the movie came to an end, I sat there debating it. It’s way too long and has that shit comedy, but it also is saying and doing something interesting. I was kind of fascinated by it while also kind of hating it.
