Last Witch-Hunter, The

So, because it had a 7pm showing and Steve Jobs and even the new Paranormal Activity started at 8pm, I went to see The Last Witch Hunter on an early Thursday showing. Last Witch Hunter is Vin Diesel’s new action flick where he stars as an 800 year old immortal witch hunter out huntin’ witches in NYC in modern times. It (somehow) costars Michael Cain, Elijah Wood, and the lurvely Rose Leslie (Ygritte from Game of Thrones).

I’ll say this up front… if Vin Diesel playing an 800 year old witch hunter is a non-starter for you, you aren’t going to see this movie anyway and you shouldn’t. But if that sounds like fun, this is a decent and fairly enjoyable action flick. I’ve seen a lot better in general (and a lot worse) but not too many better movies that are pretty much SyFy Channel original pics with a $90 million dollar budget.

I dunno – the movie looks good and has some inventive imagery and occasionally some clever dialog (such as a meta moment where someone points out a hero who can’t die and has no fear is not very exciting). The world-building of having modern day witches living under anti-evil laws was fairly good and worked better here than in other movies like The Mortal Instruments or the Underworld movies.

The biggest flaw, besides that it’s all a little low-level of goofy, is that the action scenes weren’t very well done. A little too shaky cam and overly cut… but oddly there aren’t a lot of action scenes (one at the start and maybe in the last twenty minutes). Vin Diesel does get to play around with swords though and I’m sure that made him happy.

So, yeah, there’s a decent little movie here. It could have been a lot better but it surely could have (and probably should have) been a lot worse. Again, if this flick gives you a glint in your eye, check it out.
