SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water

I don’t have any childhood or adult nostalgia or feelings for SpongeBob Squarepants so my feelings for the new Sponge out of Water movie is surface level. This doesn’t mean I’m unfamiliar with the cartoon (of which I’ve seen a handful of episodes) or the first theatrical film… but that I’m not coming at the material with ab abundance of pre-existing enjoyment. Nor am I child who can enjoy it for what it is.

Is this a good movie that adults can be entertained by? Well, maybe… it certainly does have a lot of randomness and non sequiturs that some people may enjoy. There are some jokes that are not aimed at the children. But, for me, the mild smiles I had on random occasions while watching the movie weren’t enough to keep my interest. I’m afraid, despite its good nature, the movie was a real drag. It was boring. I can’t hate the movie – it was trying to entertain its demographic and maybe adult fans of the show from their youth (or their college years) might like it. I did not.

As an aside, I kind of enjoyed the first movie so I don’t have an instant hatred of the material.
