Fantastic 4 was pretty dumb and sometimes wildly illogical but I’ve seen much worse… in the end, the best compliment I can give it was, “Wow. That was fairly pointless”. I mean… the movie happened and then it was over. I didn’t hate it like Hulk and it didn’t bore me (much) like Hulk or The Punisher and I’m sure it was better than that underground Fantastic 4 movie from 1990… I just had a problem with some of the editing irregularities and mistakes, characters, motivations, and its kind of slow pacing.
I think the actors are a mixed bag. Michael Chicklis as The Thing is pretty good – specially under all the makeup (and really, credit the makeup guys on that). Jessica Alba isn’t as bad as they make her out to be in reviews (comparison with Denise Richards as a nuclear scientist are not warranted). The guy who plays Mr. Fantastic is just bland and way too young (from what little I even know about the comic). The guy who played Human Torch was actually better than I thought he was going to be (which was massively annoying). Victor Von Doom was not a scary villain in any manner.
Probably the best thing is, even if the flick doesn’t earn it, is that it feels very much like a bright and shiny comic book. It’s not a dark and gritty version of Fantastic 4 or anything like that.
The ending was weird. I totally didn’t expect the show to be over when it was since it was such an undramatic fight… but I’m happy it did end, at least. It just wasn’t that exciting.
