The Legend of La Llorona is another attempt to mine Mexican folklore for all the money it’s worth. And, once again, we’re casting clueless white folk to get spooked by the Mexican spook. I guess those gringos just don’t believe in folklore until it jumps out of the river and steals their children. Set in a Mexico that is populated by one kindly abuela who only wants to help the gringos, three Cartel gangsters who want to hurt the gringos, one Danny Trejo, and one pissed off ghost.
On the plus side, Danny Trejo shoots La Llorona with a shotgun.
On the negative side, pretty much everything else.
Every frame of this film looks cheap. I don’t mean the sets look cheap or the costumes… I mean the actual video quality. Like when you’re watching something shot on video… though this wasn’t that exactly. Something was just… off… and it made the whole film look bargain basement. And it didn’t help a lot of it was shot at “night” which made what looked bad look even worse… and was probably just bad day-for-night and/or heavy tinting.
That’s probably ultimately the least of the problems with this boring alleged scary movie. It’s painfully mediocre with scares that don’t scare and a plot that is generic as you can get. Yes, it’s based on 19th century Mexican folklore but, whatever spin you give it, it’s just a bad ghost story about a bad ghost who wants to grab kids. Doesn’t take an old legend to rehash a generic plot.
No need to see this flick… unless you want to see Danny Trejo blast a ghost with a shotgun. That was fun for about thirty seconds. But the rest of the flick is just a mediocre, bad, boring, predictable, ugly looking flick that you’ve seen before if you’ve seen any movies with ghosts.
