Iris Warriors

Upon reflection, I had to wonder why I rented this thing. The description gave me hope. Reminded me a bit of Narnia and maybe this would promote a love of stories and storytelling.

During WW2, a woman entertains children in a basement while German bombs fall around them. The story that’s told is done so through marginal visual effects and ballet. Interpretive dance! I know nothing about ballet or interpretive dance. She tells the kids a creation story about Darkness, Light, Orange, Yellow, Purple, etc. each personified as a dancer.

They do their dance thing while the narrator reads a book to us so there’s no chance we won’t understand what their dancing means. And sometimes they cut to mediocre CGI RAF vs. Luftwaffe air battles that are supposed to reflect the dance fighting going on on screen. It’s a whole mess of them trying to explain what the hey is going on to the kids.

What I know about ballet could fill a thimble. Are the performances in this flick good? I dunno… probably? I mean, I doubt it’s top tier ballet and a connoisseurs of the art could tell… but it looked fine to me.

I’m the wrong target demo though. I didn’t care. This was not interesting to me. And I’m not sure who the right target demo is. Children who love ballet? Maybe. Patrons of the arts? I’m sure they would look elsewhere for their dancin’ fix.

I’m giving this a low score since I didn’t enjoy it at all and I’m mystified as to who really would. Adding a half a star to credit the dancers who are surely doing their level best.

Score: 64
