So there’s a new CGI animated Addams Family movie, based on the old strip, tv show, and live action movies. I watched the old show in reruns, enjoyed the first live action film (hated the second)… so I’m not a superfan of the property. I respect and enjoy the horror comedy themes… which was probably edgier when the show was new. Now it’s Tuesday at Hot Topic, I guess.
But anyway, I really did not like this interpretation of the property. It’s really bland, boring, and the majority of the Addams Family schtick was bad or groan-worthy. Maybe I’ve out-aged the jokes… or maybe this movie just bombed. I was wildly unsure… but the Rotten Tomatoes score is in the mid 30% so I think it’s not just me. I’m not even sure kids would like it.
Good cast though… but they didn’t bring much to liven up the story. The “story” I should say since the movie is basically just a bunch of side-plots glued together, most of which aren’t very interesting or funny. Probably the high point is the bit where Wednesday goes to public school… and discovers the color pink (and then wears a pink unicorn pin home just to freak out her parents). I had a mild smile at some of her subplot but that’s about it.
No point to this toothless remake that’s probably only intended for the kiddies. Or maybe if you are Addams Family superfan, you’ll enjoy it.
