After We Collided

After We Collided snuck up on me like a pernicious weed… I saw (and was moderately ok with) the first film (After from 2019) in this unlikely series but didn’t expect a sequel. For sure, I can believe the book series it was based on had to have a sequel, but didn’t think that flick did well enough to justify a part 2. But here we are and it showed up on streaming so I guess I had to watch it. Right? RIGHT?!

So After We Collided is a continuation of that college romance where the Good Girl runs into a surly, anti-social, misanthropic Bad Boy and inexplicably (except in Hollywood) they fall for each other (but then break-up). As this movie starts, the Good Girl has gotten an internship at a prestigious publisher and remains broken up with Holden and his jerk face ‘tude. For his part, he’s a roaring drunk and wants her back. What follows is them getting back together, breaking up, arguing, and having a lot (a surprisingly lot) of sex.

This would have been a more tolerable film if it had a direction and didn’t just repeat itself over and over again. Will they get together? Will they break up? Will they get back together again? Yes, all of the above. It gets old… and I’ll admit a huge part of this is that JerkFace Bad Boy keeps being a JerkFace Bad Boy. Maybe a little more tolerable than in the first flick.. but only when they are On Again.

Also doesn’t help he pretentiously narrates the opening and closing of the film, letting us know this movie is predictable romantic mush that you’ve seen before. And then name drops a bunch of classic literature, as if confusing the screenplay for, you know, much better novels. Pro-Tip: It’s not.

If you even noticed this film came out, might as well ignore it. Unless you loved (or moderately liked) the first one and you just have to know what happened to these crazy kids. I guess.
