Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

I had a blast with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (maybe not the most popular take out there considering the reviews). The Ant-Man movies have been pretty small scale superhero comedies and never really mattered to the bigger picture. So it looks like they chose to elevate this flick, giving Scott Lang and crew more agency in the MCU with an adventure on a whole other scale (pun intended).

The film drags Scott and his family into the Quantum Realm where they discover an entire micro-civilization under the thumb of Kang… the conqueror. We saw him previously at the end of the Loki tv show. Scott and the team have to help the very odd inhabitants of this world throw off the yoke of tyranny… and also prevent Kang from escaping into the multiverse.

I thought this flick was a genuine blast… just a whole lot of pulp sci-fi fun. It’s almost all CGI to greater or lesser results and while everything may not be perfect, the imagination on in the creature (and houses) design is pretty nifty. It felt very gee-whiz fun with a kind of old school adventure charm.

While I laughed at times, I was kind of impressed that the movie didn’t go full comedy like, say, Thor: Love and Thunder. There is humor for sure, but it didn’t feel like the drama (as fantastical and nutty as it was) took a back seat to the jokes. Not that they don’t take the occasional pit-stop into comedy town.

Sure, I think they make some writing shortcuts that feel like there might have been a longer cut of the movie. Sure, Kang as a villain is a little too hand-wavingly mysterious… a lot of setup for future MCU villainy. The movie isn’t perfect, but I had a gas with it anyhow.

I really enjoyed Quantumania but maybe it’s just because I’m a sucker for this kind of sci-fi gee-wizardry. So maybe if you aren’t, maybe you won’t find this flick works at all.
