Cobweb

Perhaps this opening weekend should be BarbenheimerWeb… since Cobweb, a dark little horror flick, dared open against Barbie and Oppenheimer. I guess the crafty counter-programming worked for me since, after seeing Barbie, the thought of sitting for three more hours wasn’t appealing, especially when Cobweb was a polite in-and-out ninety.

Cobweb is about a boy who thinks something – or someone – is living in the walls of his house. His parents are over-protective and don’t believe him.

This movie is… certainly a low budget horror movie. It’s better than I thought it was going to be after hum-drumming my way through the first act. It’s full of weak jump-scares and tends to spin its wheels trying reach those 90 minutes. The finale is a bit weak with a lot of running around and extra characters introduced to die.

On the other hand, I started to get intrigued as the movie padded along, slowly revealing its backstory. The film has an interesting Grimm’s faery tale vibe at times. Camera angles and use of shadow (though not light since, damn, this movie is too dark) managed to pump up some scenes as well.

So ultimately a decent horror film that needed to turn on some lights and do a better job filling time and scaring the audience. Some clever filmmaking and intrigue helps. Not a bad flick for something that crawled out of nowhere.
