Console Wars is the oft-told story of the rivalry between Sega and Nintendo. Oft-told, that is, if you’ve oft-read gaming history books or oft-watched other documentaries. If you have, this film doesn’t really teach any new information, though it does what it does with some of the bigger wigs in the fight between the two companies. If you are novice at the topic, then this is a pretty good primer on your way to more dense and more informative material. Assuming, you know, you care at all about the fight.
But, hey, it’s still fun to see the archival footage of the early 80s and 90s video game industry. Or the interviews between industry heavy-weights who have very little love lost (and possibly an ongoing grudge against) their long-gone competition. Sour grapes are a really a thing.
But, yeah, it’s a pretty flimsy doc… but on the plus side, it’s not embarrassing to watch. They have little comic interstitials that at least are well made and not embarrassing. Maybe watch? Maybe not?
