Finals: Attack on Wembley

The Final: Attack on Wembley promises to be a combination of the January 6 attack on the US capitol and the dumpster fire that was Woodstock ’99. And nothing against how violent it got, the end of the day of drunken anarchy was a let down. Which is a sick, sad thing to say… it’s like I was hoping for more bloodshed and arson… but that’s what I figured was gonna happen since, you know, Netflix documentary.

The doc is about the English soccer fans (football if you’re the rest of the planet) who descended on Wembley Stadium in 2021 due to England being in the European Finals. It’s soccer hooligans x 100 as every drunk, coked out person had an impromptu party as they collectively drunkenly planned to sneak in.

It’s nice to see such drunken debauchery take place in someone else’s country, I suppose. As the doc progressed, I figured they’d quickly declare mob rule and let the police go home. But the cops and the stadium security were mostly on the ball. Plenty of people got in but plenty waited impatiently once the bobbies drew a riot-squad line in the sand.

To suggest the whole thing ended in a bit of a whimper would be rude to the terrorized people who experienced the day. And, yeah, it was certainly scary and traumatizing. But not sure it’s worth an international documentary on Netflix… especially with such limited interviews that didn’t include any players.

At least the take-aways from the members of the mob who spoke on camera pretty much summed up how little shame anyone in an out-of-control mob really feels. That, at least, is very familiar to these American ears. Sigh.
