Float is a romance starring Andrea Bang as a Chinese-American good daughter who decides not to spend her summer at the residency her traditional parents set up for her. Instead, she runs away to spend time with her artsy auntie… and if she takes the time to learn to swim with the hot lifeguard played by Robbie Amell, that’s just gravy.
This is not a melodramatic, florid, fireworks-igniting film… and it’s not a rom-com either. It’s simply a gentle, cozy, inconsequential straight-up romance. It has some drama but it doesn’t have a hokey or unlikely plot or subplot. No wacky misunderstanding or high-stakes anything. It’s just about kind people falling in love and trying to live their lives.
It’s about its place too… a little community of good folks and found family in the Pacific Northwest. It’s a good set of side characters and co-stars who bring extra warmth to the flick.
Everything about this movie is cozy and believable. About the only thing that’s frustrating is how the young couple have to decide the rest of their lives… he’s a little buttoned up with his own responsibilities and she lives in fear of disappointing her parents. It’s natural and believable.
There’s not a lot more to say. It’s warmth permeates the screen… lovely, people living lovely lives. And falling in believable kinds of love and making believable kinds of friendships.
