Mea Culpa

Mea Culpa is a Tyler Perry flick about a defense attorney who takes on the case of an artist accused of murder most foul. She takes the gig because her husband, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law subtly suggest she not (and by subtly, I mean bluntly). But the accused is sexy and seductive and she starts to fall for his dangerous ways.

The biggest problem with this flick is that it’s too long and too slow. It takes forever to get to the point… though if you are seduced by its soundtrack and sweaty charms, probably it will be over before it starts. Yes, it’s the theory of relativity by way of Tyler Perry.

I wasn’t particularly interested in any of the mystery and goings on. Mainly because the guy was anti-charisma. He does have that confidence that I hear women like, but I don’t think the actor’s performance was convincing. He came cross in a monotone so it was hard for me to see why Rowland was so seduced by him. But maybe that’s just a me thing.

The film’s depiction of naughty and explicit sex is kind of impressive, especially from Tyler Perry. I haven’t seen all his movies, but he usually comes across flatter and more moralistic than this. Even if the movie ultimately has a moralistic bent, the skin on skin was… notable <ahem>.

The end of the movie was laughable with how mustache-twirling the melodrama was. I was combo rolling my eyes and enjoying the camp since it was, at least, different from the monotone. I was also amused wondering how much fun the actors were having doing their best Snidely Whiplashes.

Yeah, didn’t care for this one. Tyler Perry is rarely my bag and this was one of his lesser efforts.
