Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation

The Hotel Transylvania animated flicks have always hovered around the levels of ok to fair… so naturally I went to see Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation last night. And it’s amusing… you might even say its ok to fair. I didn’t suspect more and I rather inspected less.

These flicks are kind of hyperactive, bloated, and full of gags that don’t work and enough that do that maybe they override those bad ones. This one is certainly like that… in between the chaotic noise, they’ll bust out a real gem of a joke and I’ll laugh. I honestly might have laughed more this time than the other two flicks. But I also think this movie is even less focused than before… up to the point that I think the movie just said, “F it, we’re doing musical numbers” at the end. Instead of a real ending, it was a bizarre music showdown between techno (evil!) and songs like the Macarena (good!).

But, you know, there’s something in me that appreciates that anarchistic attitude. In fact, I started seeing old Looney Tunes in the flick the longer it went on.

So… the plot… Dracula takes his friends and family on a cruise… which is basically a hotel. On the water. (better like that joke, they use it a few times). There they do a bunch of random stuff like volleyball, strutting to Bruno Mars, getting some moon on a beach (get it? it’s night so they are getting moon, not sun! HAH! This movie doesn’t always kill me), and more. But Drac starts to fall in love with the ship’s captain who turns out to the great granddaughter of Van Helsing. Drama or comedy or something ensues.

I probably don’t need to convince you to see or not see this flick. All I will say is that it’s about as good as the rest, maybe a little better in the jokes, maybe a little worse in the plot padding. That means you either wanna see it or not. I won’t twist yer arm either way.
