Another documentary about unexpected PBS celebrities… you got your Bob Ross docs, your Mr. Rogers docs, your Sesame Street docs, and now a Julia Child doc. Who’s next? Dr. Ruth? I’m blushing already.
This Julia Child doc is interesting but it’s not amazing to me. And that’s largely because I’m not a foody and don’t care much about cooking shows and celebrity chefs (unless they are trying to clean up nightmare kitchens). But the doc covers her not just as a celebrity chef / educator but as a business woman who went through the decades, sometimes changing with the times, sometimes not. But always working, always the boss of her own destiny (who also went home to cook her husband dinner).
I wasn’t super engaged with the flick but mostly it worked and it was nice to see some of the old footage. I was aware of Julia Child growing up but mainly through comedians imitating her (including the SNL sketch this doc shows).
Probably worth watching, especially if you want to see some tasty foot a-cookin. Or if you want to learn more about the icon. It’s not the best reminder of PBS broadcasting, but it’s a good one.
