I wanted to enjoy this more… and the sick, sad thing is I often say that about The Muppets. They are always a better idea than execution and that hurts me to say since I loved, loved, loved them as a kid. Especially Animal. And Gonza. And Kermit. And Fozzie. And The Swedish Chef. And Beeker. And Rolf. And Piggy. And and and.
I do appreciate the corporate synergy of Disney buying The Muppets and then putting them in a shot film that promotes the Disney park rides. I’m not sure if that’s brilliant or commercially crass… or a little of both. It’s nice to see The Muppets be considered relevant enough to sell tickets.
As far as the movie goes, I laughed a few times but I found the small number of songs kind of mediocre. Except for the Dancing in the Moonlight cover during the end credits, that was pretty good.
I did enjoy Gonzo having an existential crisis and really digging into what makes him tick. As a Muppet. And I guess this whole affair begs the question of not only whether or not Muppets have souls, but if they can die at all. Muppet ghosts, man… that’ll mess a kid up! 🙂
So this was somehow a little worse and a little better than I expected it to be given my Muppet track record over the past few decades. Not the worst thing they’ve been in but hardly the best. Maybe a slight little distraction for Halloween on Disney+.
