Super Hot

I randomly watched this curious little horror comedy on Amazon Prime. It asks the question “What if the fearless vampire hunters were incompetent slacker nerds who don’t really know what they’re doing? And what if the vampires were bored and tired of all this shit?”

Super Hot is about a pizza girl who has to save the girl she’s crushing on from a sorority full of vampires. She enlists the aids of her incompetent friends and the allegedly competent Van Helsing (played with annoyance by Nobuaki Shimamoto as the great great grandson of the original Abraham Van Helsing) to rescue the girl and stop a mystical rite.

I appreciate what this film is doing far more than I enjoyed it. It’s kind of clever how these slackers are only vaguely connecting with their lives much less the import of what they are doing. They certainly think it’s serious but barely have the life skills needed to keep themselves alive much less save anyone.

Unfortunately, the movie is about as lackadaisical as the characters. The pacing is just so damn slow. Maybe that’s somewhat intentional but I suspect it’s more due to sloppy editing and direction. Maybe just some novice film makers working with what they’ve got. I’m not sure but I hope the sequel they actually promise via end credit title card shows more life and skill.

The film spends twenty minutes of its short run-time establishing the main character’s sci-fi bona-fides. They spend a lot of time in a dialog scene recasting The Avengers with 90s actors and sitting around bedrooms surrounded by Star Wars posters. But the problem is, none of this knowledge actually comes into play during the rest of the movie. It’s a wasted opportunity and also a lot of time filler.

I did smile with amusement at various points in the flick and, like I said, I kind of dig what the movie was trying to put down. I can’t really recommend it unless you are looking for something that kind of vaguely pokes fun at vampire movies.
