My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3

As someone who more-or-less enjoyed the first Big Fat Greek Wedding and passingly remembers that a sequel was made, I doubt I’ll remember this third film in a few years.

The flick opens with Nia Vardalos thanking us for coming to the theater and then recapping the first two movies (which was courteous). Then we’re off to a new adventure in the old country. Greece here we come.

The biggest problem with this shaggy short movie is that the comic timing and editing are way off. Something sluggard about scene transitions and extra beats following punchlines… the whole thing needed to be tightened and sharpened. And made funnier, frankly, and more interesting.

Some of the subplots are decent which is the only thing saving the flick from an even lower score. A plot about a Syrian refugee is cute and, frankly, should have been the whole movie. The family’s daughter’s college and romantic life isn’t bad.

But most of the rest of the movie is just leaden and uninteresting. Jokes and running jokes fail consistently.

I love that the whole cast is back and love even more that John Corbett continues to be along for the ride… is he in the movie? Eh. Is he having fun on vacation? Probably.

Overall, this is the least of the three films which is saying something after the shrug of the second film. At least it looks pretty and the stars were probably having fun (more fun than me, anyway).

Score: 66
