Once Upon a Crime

So… a Japanese Netflix Cinderella retelling set in Europe by way of a whodunit mystery where Little Red Riding Hood is the detective? I mean… sure, I guess. It’s no Hercule Poirot, but it’s definitely a mystery. A weird campy whodunnit with magic and all the usual fairy tale trappings… only with murder.

You know the bones… Cinderella wants to go to the ball, evil stepsisters, mice, carriages… and a magical make-over from an evil witch? And Little Red Riding Hood gets her own glow-up so she can attend the ball too? Only they stumble over the king’s murdered hairdresser and now we have a crime to solve. Something something glass slippers!

I don’t know what to make of this movie. It’s kind of funny in a hyperactive sparkly kind of way. It’s glitzy, the sets are beuatiful, and the costumes are pretty. It’s got a mystery that I eventually just shrugged and went along with (when the solution could be “magic” at any point, what rules apply?). It’s super talky and has deduction scenes that seem to go on forever.

I guess the film is watchable… okish? Maybe you’ll love the dayglow campy pop kawaii of it all. I’m sitting on the fence though… great credit for sparkly imagination and totally going for it. Maybe debits for going for it for far too long?
