Players

Players is about four friends who sound like they are grifters/con-men in the opening credits… but their schemes are not about taking money from fools, but for scoring one-night stands. Gina Rodriguez is one of these horndog scammers which, I guess, means the movie’s not about toxic masculinity. Oh good. It’s equal opportunity scum.

It’s pretty tasteless and crass and I had a hard time connecting with their reindeer games. But maybe that’s the point? I dunno. All I can say for sure is I wouldn’t want to hang around with these creeps… or be around them when their marks realize they’ve been tricked into sex. Classy.

Now that’s a lot of judgmental finger tutting for a movie that, at its core, features a pretty charismatic relationship between Gina Rodriguez and Damon Wayans Jr. In fact, they almost save the movie and are easily the reason to watch it. They play well together… they are fun… there’s so much chemistry between them, it makes the rest of the movie look pretty foolish.

Because, yeah, the movie is super predictable and borderline intolerable how long they keep up the façade of their conman sex games. But they gotta fill an hour and forty so they can call it a movie <eyes roll>

For Rodriguez and Wayans, I’d give the movie a 3 or even 3.5. For saddling their chemistry with a chemical spill of a plot, I give it a 2.5. Don’t piss on me and call it rain.
