Press Play

Press Play is a decent, low-stakes romantic time travel story. It’s a low-investment fairly short film that may appeal to the romantic in you and may slightly appeal to sci-fi fans. A little bit.

The film is about a girl who loses her boyfriend in a stupid accident and then discovers she can travel back in time using a mix tape of the songs they listened to together. She tries to convince him in the past that she’s from the future and stop his accident from occurring.

Not a bad little hand-wavey time travel story. Why does any of this work? Because romance and love and mix tapes and memory. Doesn’t really matter. It just does. And it makes for a decent if slowly slipping level of interest as it cruises along.

But, yeah, I kind of lost interest the more she tried to fix the past. This should be the most interesting thing, if you are more into the time travel angle. They do some low-level butterfly effect type stuff which is kind of interesting in a timey-wimey sort of way. As pure romance, it’s ok. The cast is appealing but the chemistry isn’t amazing.

It’s alright. It’s ok. It gets the job done but really doesn’t excel at what it sets out to do. Other small scale, low-stakes personal time travel flicks exist that are better. Check out Somewhere in Time or The Lake House, for example. This works for being short and to the point, at least.
