Saloum

Saloum follows a trio of mercenaries fleeing an African conflict. They hide out on a region called Saloum and quickly discover there are evil spirits about.

Lots of opportunity here to tell a unique story in a unique setting… but it was rather squandered. Nothing in this flick really grabbed my attention after the first half. The spooks weren’t particularly scary and the drama between the characters not so good. I kind of liked how it played with ideas of child soldiers and African wars…

I found the kickoff of the actual horror rather jarring and uneven. There was talk about it and then bam… I wasn’t sure what was goin on or why. Maybe I missed something in the dialog or maybe it’s playing on regional folklore that was lost on me.

It’s setting and character types were at least something different for a spookshow. But it didn’t save it from just being a blah film. Surprisingly unmemorable.
