Scare Us

Scare Us is an anthology horror film consisting of a frame story and four short films. One of the shorts films is good and the rest are varying levels of bad (and the frame story is ok).

The frame story is set in a small town terrorized by a serial killer. Four aspiring writers and a book store owner meet in a writer’s group and tell each other their short stories/films.

The first short film about a woman trapped in a storage facility is abysmal. Just a terrible non-story that goes nowhere and features some random creatures (one of which is terrible).

The second film is about a teenage boy who is worried about the weird way his police officer father is acting. Most of this is just a bunch of random surreal imagery, some of which is a little creepy but it goes nowhere and then just ends.

The third film is about a hitchhiker who runs afoul of a possessed woman at a gas station. It’s a decent scene for a better movie that wasn’t made. It also ends with a shrug.

The fourth is about a married couple who moves into the wife’s mother’s home after she dies suddenly. This is a pretty good short film with some creepy atmosphere. The only one that actually feels like its own complete story. It borrows WAY too heavily from Hereditary though.

The frame story itself contains a decent slasher film sequence but is ultimately nothing much and has a non-ending… maybe sequel baiting. Hard to tell.

So this horror movie is kind of a bust but does have one good short film and a couple semi-talented moments in the rest. But none of it is good enough to waste ninety minutes on unless you just love anthology horror films and are ok with some stinkers.
