Shaky Shivers

To call Shaky Shivers a horror/comedy would be giving too much credit to the werewolf angle in this pic. It’s much too twee and corny to be anything but an over-broad comedy that irritated me. But I kind of respect the monster mash hustle.

The flick is about two life-long friends who go to an abandoned camp because one of them is sure she’s a werewolf. That’s when things get weird(er).

The film starts out pretty decent. I was kind of amused by the sense of humor and was letting it ride for maybe twenty minutes. But then things bog down in a heightened, too deliberately wacky way that feels forced and desperate. I started to resent my time wasted with the flick even as it delved deeper into goofy spooky season territory.

It’s the kind of monster mash abandon that I should have liked. But there was just something too off, too cheesy about the whole vibe. By the end of the flick, not a damn thing mattered as its slid too far into absurdity.

This one wasn’t for me. Maybe if you get on its wavelength – or if you aren’t a crust cynical old Gen Xer, maybe you might find the camp cult classic it’s trying too hard to be.
