Spin Me Round stars Alison Brie as a restauranteur who is invited to a manager’s retreat in Italy. She meets a gaggle of other employees and starts to make friends… and then starts to fall for at least one other person. But then the gaslighting hits and people start to vanish (maybe) and paranoia blooms.
The cast is very strong. Alison Brie is her usual wonderful self and she’s joined by Aubrey Plaza… and their chemistry is pretty great. Molly Shannon has a plum side character role and she’s amusing in a fun, off-putting way. Zack Woods is his usual creepy self and they really make it work. Various other “I know that guy” actors fill out the cast with unique and unpredictable characters.
I did laugh during this comedy, but I was more often just amused and a little perplexed. It wasn’t clear where this shaggy story was going… but it was random weird fun getting there. And when it started to get really weird, it became fun trying to predict what it had in its head. How the final act shakes out is particularly amusing and weird… even if it starts to coalesce into something a little more predictable once things finally go down.
This is a pretty good flick. I loved the casting and the characters and how the story just does its own thing at its own pace. It’s a odd fun one.
