Stars Fell on Alabama

A fairly generic but not incompetent romantic comedy with a couple of likable, if not very personality laden, main characters. It got off to a wobbly start with some iffy directing which it never really overcomes, but it’s hard to say it’s a terrible movie (especially if you love rom coms and give them ALL the benefit of the doubt… which I do not).

The film is about an apparently successful Hollywood agent who is heading back to Alabama for his high school reunion. For whatever contrived reason, he tells them he’s dating a movie star (despite being an apparently successful Hollywood agent… you’d think that’d be enough to wow the folks back home). So he convinces his client – an up-and-coming starlet – to fly with him and pretend to be his girlfriend.

Pretty standard-issue rom com contrivance there… but, then again, this is also a pretty standard-issue rom com in general. The two leads are attractive and have some chemistry but I wouldn’t accuse them of an over-abundance of personality. So its hard for me to connect with either of them or care overly much if they’ll wind up together (I won’t place bets on that outcome).

But… well… it’s not terrible and occasionally its charming enough to not die a slow, boring movie death. I think rom com fans would love it though so probably should judge it by different standards. Or not… these types of movies don’t have to be bog standard generic.
