Caught Still Alice, the early-onset Alzheimer’s movie that won Julianne Moore a best actress for her portrayal as the disease victim (it also stars Kristen Stewart and Alec Baldwin in some of their best work in ages too). The movie is sad and tragic and, yes, very well acted. But going in, we’re dealing with a movie that’s nothing about the mental degeneration of a smart, funny person so you know what you’re gonna get when you go in. And it gives it to you – 100 minutes of tragedy. I can recommend it (quite a bit) if this is the kind of movie you are looking for.
Julianne Moore did succeed for her part in the movie – she was very good, balancing early concern (and humor) with the knowing tragedy that was coming. She also really handled the delicate issue of her disease being hereditary and that she may have given it to her three children so the tragedy wasn’t all personal. Her degeneration is handled well and she was worthy of the nomination and maybe even the win.
