The Summoned is about a young couple, he a regular auto mechanic, she an up-and-coming star, who are invited to an exclusive therapy clinic in the middle of nowhere. Other rich and famous folk show up and soon the mechanic is feeling a little out of place and worried his girl is going to cheat. And, say it with me, not everything is at it seems.
This flick is not only super derivative of a handful of other recent films, it’s inferior to all of them. Overly long for being a hair under 90 minutes, it just drags and meanders until it gets to the predictable ending. Just a fine example of routine horror film making on the uninspired Hollywood backlot.
The acting is ok and the setup gave me hope. Not like it was amazing, but they were giving us some solid – if vapid – characters. You kind of hate most everyone and there’s some decent relationship challenges with the lead couple.
But then things just go downhill with one too many dream sequences and an overall plot that borrows from its betters. None of its particularly scary or psychologically thrilling. It’s just routine.
Stay away from another generic horror thriller.
