See How They Run

See How They Run is a modern whodunit set in a world where people are familiar with whodunits. It’s a whodunit film about a murder that occurs at a whodunit play that is being adapted as a whodunit film. It’s very self-aware, very meta, and very charming.

Saoirse Ronin basically is this movie’s charm and gentle humor. The rest of the cast are good but they’d be nothing without her energetic novice inspector in her smartly tailored copper uniform. I was so happy every time she was on screen, talking too much or jumping to too many conclusions.

Is the murder mystery itself good? Does it leave enough clues? I’m not sure… I’m kind of terrible at whodunits. But I rather enjoyed the parlor scene where the murderer is revealed…. which the movie will tell you is the most important part of the whodunit… not counting the death in the first ten pages.

I really wish I loved the movie more though. A little of me thinks it thinks its more clever than it is and another part wishes there were more outright gags. But the other cast members are doing more subtle forms of comedy and that’s alright. Leaves more room for Ronin.

So, yeah, this is a gentle, clever, and amusing good time. I’m glad it exists and that Ronin got to play such a fun part. I’d like to see her star in more such mysteries (maybe fly her to America, update the timeline, and have her act against Daniel Craig in a Knives Out flick).
