Ohhhh… you mean like BAR TENDER. Humor. Arr-arr. I think that’s about the length and breadth of the human condition I got out of this coming-of-age flick. It’s not a terrible movie or anything, but it really doesn’t make a good argument for why this life needs a movie.
The movie is based on the memoir of a real writer… but I don’t know the writer, being the movie-watchin’ caveman that I am. So I’ll assume he’s really good and his memoir inspired folks to make this movie. Good for him, good for them… maybe so-so for me.
It’s probably a real problem in your true life account when your supporting actor is far more interesting than your lead. Ben Affleck co-stars as the uncle of the kid in this flick and he’s pretty compelling. Doesn’t have much of an arc so there’s only so much you can say about what he does, but it’s a good performance.
It’s certainly more interesting than the main character Ty Sheridan plays. I just don’t think this flick gave me enough to really care about this guy’s life. Sure his daddy is a mean one, when he’s around… and his mom supports him, his uncle supports him… and… he questions his writing skill. The end? That’s pretty reductive, but that’s also what I walked away with.
This movie isn’t bad, but it most certainly didn’t connect with me.
