Werewolf by Night

Well, here’s another cozy little corner of Marvel Comics… Marvel horror? I guess? I suppose we’ve dipped our toes in here with Wanda and the Darkhold and some of Dr. Strange (especially Multiverse of Madness). And this Disney+ special has the MCU intro, so I guess this is an MCU Halloween Special, featuring a bunch of characters I’m guessing are in the comics. I only recognized one of ’em though, myself.

Werewolf by Night is about a group of monster hunters gathered together to see who inherits a magic gem that will boost their abilities. They will have to hunt a monster in a maze for the prize.

This special is filmed in black & white to look like an old Universal Monsters movie (but don’t tell Universal that). I was a little disappointed it went with this hunters hunting the hunter angle since I was expecting a more traditional werewolf storyline. But, hey, it’s a superhero story too so I guess we need a team vs. the baddies approach.

I felt part so this dipped in pacing at times and the characters weren’t particularly memorable (comic fans may disagree). But when they finally allow a full wolfout transformation, it gets pretty fun. And remarkably violent and bloody for Disney+… though the black & white helps hide the splatter (it ain’t red, it’s black!). That doesn’t hide sword strikes and decapitations though… and I’m cool with that.

Yeah, this is a pretty decently fun like excursion and I hope to see at least one of these survivors back in the movies. And that says a lot for such a random Halloween presentation.
